I Spy Sci-Fi: Science Fiction Book Club for Rising 5th & 6th Graders (Summer 2025)
Mrs. Kristin’s book clubs are more like college classes than adult book clubs. She teaches kids how to think critically about what they read; even the youngest book clubbers are introduced to the concepts of themes, symbols, figurative language, and voice, all in age-appropriate language. We debate opinions and find textual evidence to support our ideas. We also read some really great books.
Our first sci-fi book club is rocketing us into space, ferrying us underground, and peeking into our own backyards. It’s futuristic, it’s fantastic, and it’s the foundation for years of reading enjoyment to come.
Our book list includes: Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth by Frank Cottrell Bryce, The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle.
Open to rising 5th and 6th graders.
Dates and time: Tuesdays: June 10, July 8, and July 29; 4:30–5:30 p.m.
Students are responsible for acquiring their own books. Books are not included in the cost of class.
