Frequently Asked Questions

  • Great question! Simple answer: The Wordshop is a small, home-based writing school for middle- and high schoolers in Overland Park, Kansas. We offer classes for everyone, from the kids who struggle in English Language Arts to the kids who are putting the finishing touches on their second space opera. Learn more about The Wordshop HERE.

  • All classes are taught by Kristin Marciniak (Mrs. Kristin to the 17-and-under crowd). She’s a professional writer, published author, and self-identifying indoor kid. You can learn more about her HERE.

  • Not strict at all, especially when it comes to book clubs. You know your reader best. If they’ve plowed through everything in the middle school library and want to join a high school-level book club the summer before they go into 9th grade, that’s awesome! We love to see kids challenging themselves. Just be aware that the content of upper-level book clubs may be a little more mature. (Ew, kissing.)

  • Classes are priced between $25–$30 per hour (book clubs are slightly less). Remember, class fees include not only class time but feedback on all student work.

  • Our classes are limited in seating. For this reason, we request that you cancel at least 14 days before the first day of your scheduled class.
    • Cancellations made 30 days or more before the first day of your scheduled class will receive a 100% refund.
    • Cancellations made 14-29 days before the first day of your scheduled class will receive a credit toward a future class.
    • Cancellations made 0-13 days before the first day of your scheduled class will not be compensated for any payments already made.

  • Oh man, missing class is the worst. But it’s not the end of the world! Definitely don’t come to class if you’re sick. We can make private arrangements to make sure you have all the information you need before the next session. That’s why Covid invented Zoom.

  • If someone in your home has the flu or COVID but your student has not tested positive:

    • your student may attend class in person at The Wordshop while wearing a medical-grade face mask. Other students in attendance will also be given the option of wearing masks.

    • your student may attend class virtually. Please contact Mrs. Kristin (kristin@opwordshop.com) at least an hour before class starts so she can set up the online meeting.

Thank you so much for following this protocol. It will go a long way in keeping my family safe and ensuring The Wordshop can stay open without interruptions.

  • The Wordshop is smack-dab between two Targets and just a few blocks from a Starbucks. This is clearly “you time.” You are also more than welcome to chill in our hearth room and, when the weather is nice, on our porch or deck. There are plenty of books available for your perusal and a golden retriever to pet.

  • Our home is in a shallow cul-de-sac, which makes parking difficult. Feel free to drop off in our driveway, but if you’re parking for the long haul, please be kind to our neighbors and find a straightaway on the main part of the street.

  • Like the best private clubs and speakeasies, The Wordshop’s address is available only to members. For reference, we’re located near 127th and Antioch in Overland Park, Kansas. Our location is easily accessible by I-69 and I-435.
