From the Non-Restricted Section: High School Book Club (Summer 2025)
Mrs. Kristin’s book clubs are more like college classes than adult book clubs. She teaches kids how to think critically about what they read; even the youngest book clubbers are introduced to the concepts of themes, symbols, figurative language, and voice, all in age-appropriate language. We debate opinions and find textual evidence to support our ideas. We also read some really great books.
The most frequent complaint Mrs. Kristin hears from older kids is that there’s nothing to read. Like, anywhere. And then she asks if they’ve been to the “adult” (general population) section of the library and they look at her as if it’s her first time on Earth.
Anyone can read books from the main library shelves. There’s no minimum age requirement. Sure, some of the content might not be appropriate, sex-wise, for teenagers, and some of it might bore them out of their skulls. But by middle school, you pretty much know all the words you’re going to know. You need to read stuff that interests you.
This book club is tailor made for high schoolers who aren’t into traditional upper-middle grade or young adult books. Mrs. Kristin picked a few favorites in a variety of genres that will have your readers thinking—and laughing—all summer long. That’s the secret about adults: we like to have fun, too.
We’ll be reading: 1984 by George Orwell, Big Trouble by Dave Barry (Mrs. Kristin’s #1 favorite book of all time), and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
Dates and times: Wednesdays: June 18, July 16, August 6; 4:30–5:30 p.m.
Students are responsible for acquiring their own books. Books are not included in the cost of class.
