Young Poets' Society (Fall 2024)

$115.00

Does poetry suck? Some of it. But there’s also a whole world of poetry that doesn’t suck. That’s the type of poetry we’ll be reading and writing at the Young Poets’ Society.

During this three-week class, we’ll talk about the things that make traditional poetry boring and hard to understand. We’ll try to figure out the point of poetry and talk about the language poets use to help readers visualize a poem’s meaning.

While we might look at a few poems written specifically for kids, we’re mostly going to focus on poems written for everyone, such as those by William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and Langston Hughes (among many others). Some of those poems will serve as inspiration for our own work. We’ll also create blackout poetry and fill in poetry frames to warm up our creative muscles.

This class is great for kids who either love or hate poetry, or those who don't have an opinion either way. The poems we read will be short but contain big ideas. This class works wonders for building confidence in writing and reading! Open to 5th graders.

3 sessions, 90 minutes

Thursdays, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
